What do a cup of coffee, specialized aerospace and children with complex care needs have in common? The answer is Coffee Morning for Matthew’s House.
For the last three years, the staff at Cascade Aerospace in Abbotsford have participated in Coffee Morning for Matthew’s House, raising thousands of dollars and supporting families whose children live with complex care needs.
Coffee Morning is a unique fundraiser that’s easy for businesses to execute. Simply provide coffee and goodies for your staff during their regularly scheduled coffee break and let them know that it’s a fundraiser for Matthew’s House.
Kathy Hocken (in the photo above, centre, with fellow employees, Morgan Krenz and Terry Savenye) =, who works in Accounts Payable at Cascade, has volunteered at the company’s last three Coffee Morning events. She says the event is easy to organize and it’s a great way to encourage the staff to support a good cause.
“It’s a great way to get the whole company involved,” she says.
The company has always signed up early, taking advantage of the incentive to have Starbucks provide free coffee for the event. Starbucks has partnered with Matthew’s House since the beginning of this fundraising initiative, providing free, freshly brewed coffee for those who sign up by March 26th. This makes it even easier to host an event.
Lorna Hart is also on staff at Cascade and has been involved from the very start.
“Cascade Aerospace chose to support Matthew’s House starting in 2015 because while it is a relatively small percentage of families who need Matthew’s House, their need is great, and one of our employees’ families understood that need firsthand,” Hart says. “That person’s fellow employees supported the fundraising efforts from then on and continue today.”
The Coffee Morning at Cascade is held during their regular coffee break time allowing for maximum participation by their employees and includes a popular bake sale. The bake sale proceeds also go to the Coffee Morning fundraiser.
Laura Ullock, the resource development assistant for Matthew’s House, says they are grateful for companies like Cascade and their faithful participation in Coffee Morning. Having a large company like Cascade involved helps raise awareness for Matthew’s House but she says it’s also beneficial to the company itself.
“Participating in fundraising events like this is a great team builder for companies and gives the organization a chance to give back to a charity right in their own community,” Ullock says.
Laura first met Kathy at their Coffee Morning two years ago. Kathy has since deepened her relationship with Matthew’s House by continuing to volunteer with the organization on her own. She has learned a lot about the families who use this resource and has seen how fundraising events make a difference. She hopes other businesses will get on board and host a Coffee Morning for Matthew’s House.
“It is a really fun event and getting free coffee from Starbucks for making a donation is a bonus,” she says. “Raising money for such a good cause that helps children and families really makes it worthwhile.”
Coffee Morning for Matthew’s House happens April 23-27, 2018. Businesses that sign up to host a Coffee Morning by March 26th can request to have Starbucks provide free coffee for the event. Sign up your business to host a Coffee Morning today!
