Run for Rest Raises Funds

Over 75 people came out for the 4th annual Run for Rest on September 24th, raising over $1000 for Matthew’s House. Participants of all ages and abilities came out to walk or run the 5 km route around Mill Lake in Abbotsford. The first person to cross the finish line was Graham Moffatt, who is visiting from Nottingham, England.

“I try to find a run to take part in whenever I travel,” he explained. “It’s a great way to get to know a community. I contacted Wendy at the Running Room and she suggested this run.”

This is the second year that the Running Room sponsored the event and provided on-line registration, the inflatable arch, race bibs and time clock. Running Room manager Wendy Jordan-Oliver says this kind of community run is exactly the kind of event that Running Room likes to support.

“Our runners like to support community events,” she says. “Once I found out how Matthew’s House supports families I knew it was something that we needed to be a part of.”

Second place finisher was 8-year-old Elijah McKechnie whose mother also participated in the run. Third place went to Kevin Bredeman.

“It really was a great event, for a great cause,” Kevin said.

The Run for Rest raises funds for Matthew’s House which supports families by providing quality care for children who live with complex care needs. Several of the children staying at Matthew’s House participated in the event as well. For the organizers, it was encouraging to see so many families with children come out to support families in this way.

“It’s so appropriate that this event is supported by parents, grandparents and children of all ages and abilities,” said Alan Cavin, director of resource development for Matthew’s House. “It’s awesome to see families supporting families. We appreciate all the runners and walkers who came out this year.”
