Sugar Scrubs Provide Sweet Support

Earlier this year, we received a lovely letter and poster from Ella Wickens, a grade 6 student at Clayburn Middle School. As part of her Health and Career class, Ella and her fellow students took part in an entrepreneur project in which they had to come up with a business idea or product from scratch that they would then create, market and sell.

“I decided to make sugar body scrubs,” Ella explains. “I researched the ingredients and how to make them.”

She made four different scented scrubs: Candy Cane, Lemon, Vanilla and Mint. These were sold in different sizes ranging from $2.50 – $3.50 a jar. The Sugar Scrubs were then sold at the Entrepreneur Show at the school where students had an opportunity to shop. Ella’s product proved to be very popular, she sold every one of the 30 jars she made.

“I learned a lot about what goes into running a business and would love to maybe have a business of my own someday.” Ella Wickens, entrepreneur

Part of Ella’s business plan was to donate 10% of her earnings to charity. Ella chose Matthew’s House.

“I knew Matthew before he died. He always made me smile,” she says.

Ella has supported Matthew’s House for years with various charitable efforts including a Lemonade Stand that she and her siblings ran during the summer. Her personal connection with Matthew made the respite home an obvious choice for her support but she’s also aware that Matthew’s House is a much needed resource in the community.

“I believe those kids need the extra special care that Matthew’s House provides.”

We’re always inspired by the unique and generous ways that people in our community support families at Matthew’s House. Get creative and partner with us!
