Variety Grant Makes Matthew’s House Secure

A grant from Variety – The Children’s Charity ensures that children who visit Matthew’s House are safe and secure during their stay.

Matthew’s House is a ‘home away from home’ that provides respite care for children with complex health care issues, strengthening the whole family unit as parents have a chance to rest and rejuvenate. Located in Abbotsford, Matthew’s House provides respite for up to five children at a time, in a state-of-the-art residence staffed by experienced caregivers.

Wendy Toohey, who manages Matthew’s House, says that this new locking system gives peace of mind to families. The system requires a device to be used to both enter and exit the building making it a very secure environment. For some families, this is an absolute necessity.

“We have a number of children that stay with us who would not be able to do so otherwise,” Toohey says. “These are children who live in a completely secure environment at home, which means their respite environment also needs to be completely secure. Now that we have this system in place, Matthew’s House can offer these families the opportunity for the rest they need.”

The $6883.00 grant from Variety – The Children’s Charity has made this possible.

“We’re very pleased to be a part of the team at Matthew’s House,” says Bernice Scholten, executive director of Variety. “Helping to build capacity in community-based organizations such as this directly impacts our ability to help even more children in British Columbia who have special needs.”

Alan Cavin, director of resource development for Matthew’s House is grateful to be partnering with such a respected organization.

“We are excited to have made this partnership with Variety – The Children’s Charity,” Cavin says. “We applaud them for all the good work they do in so many communities around the province and thank them for supporting Matthew’s House in this way.”

It takes a commitment from the community to keep Matthew’s House running, costing $860,000 annually, most of which comes from generous donations. Matthew’s House is facilitated by Communitas Supportive Care Society, a social service agency with nearly 40 years of experience in providing quality care to individuals living with disabilities.
